OK. I Didn't take my time and rushed installing a helicoil in a stripped head bolt hole in my BB. The stud is crooked and I can't get the head on. I have a time sert on the way. It's actually the big sert and it will allow me to use my 7/16-14 stud. Any advice on drilling and tapping so I don't mess this up this time?? An old gasket maybe or some kind of template so I am straight??

Anyone done this with the motor in the car?? If so what did you use as a guide?

Thanks.

I have never tried it, I have my friend help who is a mechanic. He has a drill with a attachment that keeps the drill 90 to the surface he is drilling on.

You not only need something to make sure the drill goes in 90 degrees to the block surface but also that the tapping process goes in 90 degrees as well. The drill is going to want to follow the hole which is already in there now and a tap can go in crooked especially when tapping by hand.

I was able to use a bolt in that one hole. It's a lot more forgiving than the stud. Whew.
