Ok John, I finally made it over there today and got some decent pictures. It isn't much to look at yet, it's in pieces. I just finished fabbing up the exhaust system and hangers last week. Going to start disassembling this weekend so I can finish welding up the frame and get it ready for paint. Also have to finish welding up the exhaust and then clean up my welds before it gets coated. The doors, hood, and tail gate still need more body work, and then paint.
Here is the frame and running gear...

Thanks, I feel it is pretty darn good considering the cramped spaces we work in. (limited time and money too)
I dug around and found some old pictures from roughly two years ago when we had just finished the frame and were mocking up the engine/transmission.

Your welcome John. I have been helping him work on it since he bought it in 2007. To say it is a long term project... is about spot on. It started out as a complete, running truck. It had a stock frame, fleetside bed, a Buick 455/TH400 swapped into it, and a BOP 12 bolt rear. Basically, we used: the cab, wiper cowl, hood, grille, driver's door. The rest is either new, used later model, or hand-fabricated.

More pictures, haven't done much due to the weather recently. We got the headers back from being coated today. I stopped by their house after picking up the headers, and John's last post prompted me to take a few pictures of their living room...

Not much new to share, the weather has been a real hindrance for a few weeks now. I took these last weekend, hadn't gotten around to posting them. Frame is pretty much broken down and on a make shift rotisserie. (two engine stands) Have to finish cleaning up the bottom side and get it in primer. Also, if you look close there are some extra brackets. We built a set of cal trac style bars to control the wheel hop. There is still some finish welding to be done, and add a few gussets to some brackets.

Painted the frame Monday, and got the one-piece door glass worked out this week. We weren't able to completely fill the void of the vent window with glass. The way the upper door hinge swings into the door itself prevents that. A sheet metal piece will have to be fabricated to complete the conversion. Here are a few more pictures for now...

Will do, with a little luck... might have the rear axle finished and painted this week. Also would like to get the front brakes assembled 100%. I would say a few more weeks before the cab is finished, then it can go back on the frame. I feel that once the cab and bed go back on - it will really start to look like a truck. In the current state, I think most people see it as a huge go cart. ;)

Im back and forth on this truck ,I really have too much money and time invested to just give up and I know you lose your shirt on projects like it in piles and pieces but it has only been 2 years so I guess I will just have to give it more time and see what happens .I do love my old truck though ,what there is left of it anyway. I really wish I had not started a restoration on it and just kept driving it as a beater. Next time ,what am I saying ? No more next times for me ,No more projects I hope .

Bed is on, but something isn't right. Wheels aren't centered. All I can think of, my father built the frame and set everything up based on a brand new set of late 70's T/A leaf springs. Then swapped to 88'-98' GM truck leafs during the build. I'm wondering if the springs are enough different to throw things off that much.

After doing a great job on our Chevelle twice ,I thought I could trust them as we had become good friends ,or so I thought .If it leaves now in its current state it will never get finished as I cant afford to start over and it is worth very little as a project so it will likely just be piled in a corner of my shop or sold off slowly in pieces .I try to not even go by the shop anymore as I dont really want to see it.

Sorry to hear that Flash, maybe you need to make a trip over a couple of times a week checking on the progress, it might light a fire under them. Sometimes being a pest will get them moving again on it. By not going over there they might figure you have lost interest in it.

Just as an FYI - I have those same wheels on my 71 Corvette and found out the hard way that some wheel cleaners are pretty harsh. Be careful what you use on them as something I had from one of the reputable detailing suppliers (Poorboys, etc.) had some kind of very harsh chemical that oxidized the aluminum immediately. I took me hours to try to polish the lip back.... I haven't even tried to get the inner barrels polished back yet and the spokes have some light streaking from where the cleaner sat too long in certain places. Normally I soak all four wheels first and then go back and start cleaning them so unfortunately I didn't even get lucky enough to only do this to one, but rather all four. The cleaner I used was something I have been using for a while on my Fiancé's 06 TL as well as my 2012 Acura TL with no adverse effects. I was so pissed I threw the bottle out and don't remember what it was but want to say it was a heavy duty wheel cleaner from Poorboy's.... Sonax works well though!
Just something to think about.
Edit
This stuff! Do not use this on uncoated wheels!! Of course it says it in the instructions, but I had already been using it regularly and didn't even think about it.

The wheels were on his green 72' first, I never used anything but soap and water on them. And an old toothbrush to get in the nooks and crannies. I think he has had those wheels and tires for roughly 6 years now.

Hood and wiper cowl are on. I will try to get some pictures posted soon. Still need to finish the wiring and assemble the rest of the interior. Also, the front coil springs are too stiff. Going to swap them out with a different set and hope it corrects the ride height. If anyone needs some brand new springs for a 2nd gen Camaro with a BBC - holler.

Not much to report, carpet is done, headliner is in. Between weather, and my father not feeling well... not a lot has gotten completed.

Going to attempt to fix the oil leak tomorrow. Then on to the fuel leak. Fun stuff...
Hoping it will start right up and run after those two things are addressed. ::fingers crossed::

Loose oil filter... the old man is slipping. :( Tightened the filter, topped off the oil, started right up.
Still chasing the fuel leak. And damnit if it doesn't have a transmission leak. It appears the top oil cooler line on the trans is hitting the floor of the cab. Going to get after it again this weekend.

Not much new to report. The fly by wire set up is on the fritz. It was working, stopped responding. Reading up on trouble shooting methods because I have never dealt with this before. Also, the transmission only has reverse. The builder believes that the grease he uses to hold the ball bearings in during assembly has dried up.
We've been busy with my car and the Lemans lately. Once I get the gas pedal and throttle body to communicate with one another, the rest should fall into place.

Long overdue update...
Found a huge vacuum leak, reset the computer - throttle fixed. Next was the fans not working, with help of a good friend/wiring guru - we were able to determine something in the harness wasn't right. We did some wiring of our own and got the fans functioning properly.
Now the transmission, the original rebuilder has fallen ill and was unable to help resolve the issues. Today I went with my father to Monster Transmissions in Brooksville, FL. We picked up a 4L65E good to 550 HP. And dropped off the "core" out of his truck. Very professional operation and friendly staff. Now... to find the time to get over there and install it.
We have a different set of wheels on order as well. Just not happy with having to use spacers. The new wheels are having to be built, so it will be 4-6 weeks. Wheel Vintiques is the vendor.

Transmission is in and has forward gears, huge victory. I found yet another vacuum leak today and fixed it. Wrapping up the A/C lines and charging the system soon, then the seat can go in. Still no wheels yet...

The only thing wrong with the current wheels is that they are reversed to the inside too much. (4.5" back space) I was trying desperately to get wheels with a 2" - 2.5" back space. But, those are made of unobtainium. These have a 3.5 back space, it should help a decent amount. Going to run small, 3/16" spacers on the rear to even things out better.
I still have to pull the rear out to flip the perches to the top of the axle tubes. That will fix the ride height.

It was a fairly easy job, being that everything is new/rebuilt and clean. I picked up the steel for the new mounts today on my way into work, damn swing shifts again. I'll get it all wrapped up and back together this weekend.
The it's down to: front end alignment, and a dyno tune.
carpoor
10-28-2015, 08:10 PM
And... even though it was a small change, it is going to lead to a lot of re-engineering. :(
carpoor
11-12-2015, 02:48 PM
Ah yes... more nonsense. :grumpy:
Got the truck back on the ground today. The ride height is fixed, the axle is in the correct spot on the leaf springs. But, required a 2" longer driveshaft and new traction bars to be fabbed. Now the wheels are not centered in the rear wheel wells. I'll be moving the bed back over an inch next. He never liked how close the bed was to the cab. But, I wish we would have addressed these things before it was painted. The old man is getting extremely impatient in his golden years. (Creating lots of extra work and headaches for me)

I have to agree with him that it will look better with wheels centered ,truck looks good.

It definitely needs to be done, I just wish that these issues were addressed during the build. One other issue I forgot, the cross member that the fuel tank straps connect to hits the rear differential cover. I'm going to have to notch it quite a bit.

Well, things didn't go as planned. :( It has a miss, and something is up with the #7 cylinder. I need to do a compression and leak down test. My father is devastated and wants to get rid of the truck.

I took a little time today to pop the valve cover and look for any broken valve springs. Everything looks good. I was suspicious of the plug wire, changed that wire. No real change, still flutters at idle. Next is a compression test, and I want to move the injector from that cylinder to another to see if the miss follows it.
It's tucked away in the garage for now.
carpoor
03-29-2017, 06:22 PM
Spent more time on it yesterday. I started by swapping the injectors for the #1 and #7 cylinders. Sure enough, the miss moved to the #1 cylinder. I got the engine up to temp and the #1 header tube was over 200 degrees cooler than the other seven cylinders. (Verified with an infrared gun, great tool)
New injector is on the way, should fix that problem.
carpoor
04-01-2017, 05:03 PM
Got the injector swapped in, and installed two fresh plugs in #1 & #7. It's running much better. All I can say is - this thing is going to wear out back tires at an alarming rate.
It seems that I have traded one problem for another. None of the lights are working. Might be a ground wire that we forgot to reconnect when the bed was off. Going to stick it on the lift Tuesday and start tracing wires.
