Stupid question,I'm sure.Tomorrow I want to start tearing the suspension components off so I can blast and paint them. The motor will be in for at least another month.Should I place the stands as far foward as possible or more toward the cowl area? I want to be as gentle as I can with the black car.

Do you have 2 sets, hopefully one set taller than the other? If so I would place one set at the cowl and another near the front bumper. Lift from the cross member then lower the front to the stands near the cowl, adjust the other set up so they're close to the frame and continue to lower. The front will sag and hit the second set. Without the second set it will sag a lot because of the engine weight. I wouldn't want to leave it that way a long time. If you just put them out front it will still sag behind them.

If only one set then as close to the lower control arm as possible or support the cross member.

Hank,I put the floor jack on the xmember for added support when I'm not working on it. Think that will work?

Sure as long as it doesn't drop, I'd check it often. You'd be surprised how much the front will sag trying to hold up the engine.
